- Red Grapes
Red grapes and their seed extract have a component called resveratrol, which can prevent kidney dysfunction. These fruits also are filled with the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties to protect the kidney as we age.
- Egg Whites
While eggs are a great source of protein, the egg yolk has high amounts of phosphorus, which is not renal-friendly. In contrast, egg whites are easily digestible, renal-friendly, and remain a formidable source of protein.
Like egg whites, radishes are low in phosphorus. They are also relatively low in potassium, making them a renal-friendly addition to any senior diet. Even more so, these crunchy vegetables are high in vitamin C and loaded with flavor.
Cabbage is a true catchall vegetable. It’s low in sodium, phosphorus, and potassium, making it incredibly renal-friendly. It also is chock full of fiber, which plays a crucial role in keeping senior digestive systems running efficiently.
Another great source of fiber, cauliflower provides a nutritious boost to any renal diet. It’s low in potassium, and high in good nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin K. While the low potassium is gentle on the kidney, the aforementioned vitamins work together to boost the immune system and fight free radicals.
While many other winter squashes are high in potassium, turnips are much more renal-friendly. As root vegetables, they can be boiled and mashed, creating a kidney-friendly swap for holiday dishes.
- Bell Peppers
While bell peppers are incredibly high in nutrients like Vitamin C, they are surprisingly low in potassium. Also low in sodium, bell peppers are a flavorful vegetable that can brighten any renal diet.
For a leafy green, seniors should supplement potassium rich spinach or kale for arugula. This wild green is both low in potassium and rich in nitrates. These have been shown to help maintain low blood pressure, which is crucial for those protecting their kidneys.
